SNL: S27E02... HOST: SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT... DATE: OCTOBER 6, 2001
/or...
Roland Taverner On A Saturday Night
Just like, Johnny Knoxville, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jim Breuer, Seann William Scott just has one of those faces that always cracks me up. Well, I guess not always because unlike the other three who always look either stoned or drunk, Seann William Scott’s face has more chameleon-like attribute where he can either look like a fun loving goofball or some sort of bully of a jock with very little in between.
Fortunately, with this being a comedy show the sillier side of Seann William Scott got to shine. This was a nice change of pace considering I spent an entire year watching our host as a serious cop in my 52 viewings and reviews of the movie Southland Tales. Though I loved him in that movie, I wouldn’t say that his character was all that fun so it was nice to see him let loose.
This episode turned out to be a pretty good one, not just because I liked the host but it also felt more fitting of a first show back following 9/11 since they actually acknowledged the events instead of trying to act like nothing happened at all. I understand how it was a much different time with the attacks being less than a month in the past and they were probably just testing the water with the first episode but I felt that this episode had a much better blend to where the normalcy being promoted felt real.
I also really enjoyed the slow rollout of Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers and the rest of the featured cast because this collection of Not Ready For Prime Time Players was in desperate need of new blood. Where yesterday’s episode didn’t feature any new cast members and ended up feeling like another so-so episode from last year, tonight’s show felt like the start of something new and I’m now much more excited to see what the rest of the year has to offer.
Hopefully, as the show gets better, and I grow used to my new work schedule, the quality of my reviews will improve as well since I feel like I’ve fallen into a bit of a hole where I’ve been rushing to make my day instead of fully enjoying the experience.
Oh well, we’ll see how things turn out as the year continues on. Until then, it’s now time for me to shift gears in order to share what I saw, as I give you.
The Wicker Breakdown:
This week's show started with A Message From The President Of The United States had Will Ferrell as George W. Bush inform Osama bin Laden “You screwed up big time,” before going on to threaten the terrorist leader that he put a target on his back for his involvement in 9/11. Of course, with this being the opening sketch it eventually led to the announcement of, “Live from New York…”
Seann William Scott then officially opened the show with a monolog where he defended his semen drinking scene from the latest American Pie movie by sharing classic clips of “Hollywood films” where his ancestors were in similar semen scenes as well, showing he comes from a long line of semen interacting actors, going all the way back to the silent era of film.
We then got a fake ad for Law & Order: Parking Violations Unit which was a parody spin-off of Law & Order that focused on the mundane crimes that take place in a suburban parking patrol unit.
Jeffrey's then returned for another installment where this time Seann William Scott and Jimmy Fallon played clothing folders at a high-end clothing store, and as always, they treated their customers like garbage while trying to hold back their laughter when dealing with Horatio Sanz and Will Ferrell.
This was followed by a parody of an Emmy Awards Pre-Show that had Ana Gasteyer as Joan Rivers who kept speaking out at the dressed-down award show-goers who weren’t all flashy this year since everyone was still mourning all of the loss during 9/11. She was extra fired up due to the fact the E! attempted to cancel her segment in an effort to be more reverential which is a state of being that Joan Rivers just never seemed to be able to pull off, especially not during her red carpet routine.
Jarret's Room then returned for another installment of Jimmy Fallon’s titular characters dorm room webcast/talk show. This time, he and his sidekick Goby, as played by Horatio Sanz, and special guest, Seann William Scott hosted a mean-spirited award show while making fun of photos from the last semester’s yearbook.
Sum41 then took to the stage to perform Fat Lip.
Once again, Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey gave us the news. This week, Tina Fey gave us a visceral editorial about Israel over their outrage toward the United States for wanting to even acknowledge a Palestinian state. The editorial actually wasn’t all that visceral at all and was just Tina Fey saying now’s not the right time to add to the list of Middle Eastern issues. Tracy Morgan dropped by to share that he’s now in favor of racial profiling now that 9/11 has created a new focus for the profilers. Chevy Chase also made a quick appearance as the Land Shark in order to eat Tina Fey.
Patriotic Shorts took us to a business meeting where everyone involved was wearing some sort of American Flag attire as part of the patriotic trend that followed 9/11. Will Ferrell then took this display of patriotism even one step further by showing up in a tiny American Speedo which freaked out the entire room.
The How Do You Say? Ah Yes, Show brought the return of Chris Kattan as Antonio Banderas where this time he tried to use his Hispanic charm to win over Amy Poehler as Paula Zahn, with this being Poehler’s sketch debut.
My Big Thick Novel was a new Jack Handey feature very similar to Deep Thoughts only for this series Handey’s tales are told via illustrations instead of just text. This week, Jack Handey shares a chapter where his character kept getting hit by a blow-darts and only to yell at his doctor when she told him just how many darts hit him asking if she was some sort of blow-dart counter.
Sum41 then returned to the stage to perform In Too Deep.
This was followed by a fake ad for The Approval Center which was a loaning company that approved deadbeats for anything and everything whether or not they have any idea what they are actually getting themselves into.
My Girlfriend The Porn Star had Amy Poehler come clean to her boyfriend, Seann William Scott, that she actually makes pornos for a living.
Finally, Seann William Scott closed the show by thanking the audience and saying he goodnights.
Though there were a couple of new season stumbles, thanks to these sketches that contained my three favorite moments of the night, the show still turned out to be pretty fun, enough so to have me excited about upcoming viewing. First, I loved Patriotic Shorts because I remember how much this sketch cracked me up when it originally aired and the shock value of a man in short shorts had yet to be overdone. Next, I really liked The Approval Center fake ad, not only because the concept was funny but also because Seann William Scott donned a sweet mullet and Horatio Sanz looked great in his see-through tank top. Finally, I was a fan of My Girlfriend The Porn Star because as a U.C.B. fan it was not only nice to see Amy Poehler be more than a background character but it was nice to see that she brought with her that U.C.B. style.
