Welcome To The Five-Timers Club, Ms. Barrymore!!!

As I said the past four times that Drew Barrymore has hosted I’m a fan of this woman with the storied career mainly for her talent alone but also because she’s a peer who’s almost exactly one year older than me making it compelling to look back and compare our polar opposite upbringings. I also liked how she was a part of darker movies in her youth like Firestarter and Cat’s Eye which were movies I took pride in watching in the theaters even though neither was meant for my age group. Meanwhile, there she was acting in these roles for movies that I probably should’ve waited to see.

Actually, I don’t really have a problem with being introduced to these types of films at such an early age because I feel that the fact that I was allowed to watch whatever I wanted took away many taboos because I had no forbidden fruit to hang onto. This might explain why I’m not obsessed with horror and action films since I don’t have the titillating memories of getting away with watching genres that were not allowed. I see in my little nephew how the more that my sister and her fiancé try to control his love for violent video games, the more he seems drawn to them.

Other than that, I think that I’ve covered most of my thoughts on tonight’s host in my reviews of her appearances from the past, so it’s now time to get into discussing tonight’s actual episode. So far, the only Drew Barrymore visit that I wasn’t a fan of was the one where she was promoting the first Charlie’s Angels, but that was due to a combination of her being overconfident in her comedic skill against horribly written content. One or the other would have been fine, but I couldn’t handle both at the same time.

Tonight’s episode was just fine, nothing too exciting but at the same time the content and acting was entirely competent and generated a couple of audible laughs. That said, it was the middle of the pack as for as where it lands on my list of favorites from this season because it was another episode that was perfectly fine to watch but left me struggling to come up with what I’ve written up above.

With that, I’m just going to wrap this one up by shifting gears to share what I saw, as I give you…

The Wicker Breakdown:

This week's show started with a parody of American Idol where Jason Sudeikis, Amy Poehler, and Kenan Thompson played Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson to travel the country to offer criticism to animal contestants for the new season of the show. Of course, with this being the opening sketch, it eventually led to the announcement of, “Live from New York…”
Drew Barrymore then officially opened the show with a monolog about how this visit qualified her for the Five-Timers Club and how she loved hosting the show because it allowed her to perform standard comedy as opposed to the typical rom-com content she’s usually cast to perform. She then headed backstage to track down the special Five-Timers Club room and on the way, bumped into Andy Samberg which unraveled a series of romantic-comedy film clichés as she continued to hunt for the club.
The Dakota Fanning Show had Drew Barrymore as the brainy kid actress who hosted a show where she failed to connect with her acting peers that she had on as her guests, including Bill Hader as Daniel Radcliffe and Drew Barrymore as Abigail Breslin.
Poison Therapy had Kristen Wiig as a couples counselor who was trying to mend a rocky relationship between Will Forte and Drew Barrymore who sought therapy over Drew’s continuous attempts to poison will with dioxin which led to a crazy lesion outbreak on his face. Throughout the session, both Drew and Will seemed utterly rational and treated this poisoning situation as just a standard quirk that they’re working on.
This was followed by another SNL Digital Short called Body Fuzion which was a parody of a workout tape from 1986 which featured Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph all working up a pretty tough sweat while performing an almost casual looking workout routine. To add to the fun, this sketch appeared to be shot with a home video camera giving it the image quality of old school porn.
Target Greatland returned for more fun and games with Kristen Wiig as the over-enthusiastic Target employee who is known for wandering off in the middle of ringing up customers when she finds any impressive deals. For this installment, Wiig was training Drew Barrymore as a new hire who had similar interest to her trainer only her short attention span issues were even worse.
Nervous Job Interviewee had Drew Barrymore in the titular role to fanatically sip on an iced caffeinated beverage while openly insulting a company’s hiring team because she couldn’t control her spun out ramblings.
Lily Allen then took to the stage to perform Smile.
Once again, Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers gave us the news. This week, Kenan Thompson dropped by as a nanny character to demonstrate how to properly discipline a surly child with some help from an adorable fake baby who Kenan Nanny stared down and threatened over an acted out.
Versace Super Bowl Party brought back Maya Rudolph as Donatella Versace to host her brand of Super Bowl Party with several cast member and Drew playing her celebrity guests.
Jojo The Valet had Amy Poehler as the gawky/spunky country club valet who let out his feelings for a recently-divorced club member Drew Barrymore as Ashley Sanderson who wasn’t sure about this wiry little man.
This was followed by a fake ad for Firestarter Smoked Sausages where Drew Barrymore revised her childhood role as the Firestarter to hawk her new line of smoked sausages.
Lily Allen then returned to the stage to perform LDN.
The Formosa had Bill Hader as a drunken Peter O’Toole in order to reminisce with Drew Barrymore about the good-old days of decadent behavior that found it perfectly fine to let Barrymore drink at such a young age.
This was followed by yet another repeat of the Nelson Baby Toupees commercial from last season which was an ad for a wig line for children.
Finally, Drew Barrymore closed the show by thanking the audience and saying her goodnights.

Though this may not have been an episode to write home about based on what I saw, it was still pretty fun to watch, thanks to sketches like these that contained my three favorite moments of the night. First, I loved the Nervous Job Interviewee interview because Drew Barrymore’s caffeine-fueled insulting ramblings felt like it came with experience. Next, I really liked this week’s Target Greatland because I really like this character from Kristen Wiig. Finally, I was a fan of the SNL Digital Short, Body Fuzion because it made me nostalgic for ‘80s VHS porn.
