Resolution: My new job requires that I wear a necktie. I figure since this will be a standard issued tie I'll need some way to switch things up.

So, here we are.

Result #79: Three Out Of Twenty Is Far From A Success… But… This May Be As Close As I Get… Since I Hope To Never Wear A Tie Again…

Update #1: My Necktie Jump Off Point…

Date: 5-30-2014

I've had my corporate necktie and this instructional book What Knot to Wear for a while now. For some reason, however, I've continually put off starting this resolution. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I am against bringing my work home with me in any form, but a resolution's a resolution and it's time to let this one begin.

In the photo above you can see the only way I currently know how to tie a necktie next to the book that will hopefully change my style limitations.

I'm hoping to learn the Windsor Knot by tomorrow.

I'll keep you posted.

Update #2: Technique #1: The Pratt/Shelby…

Date: 6-2-2014

I now know two ways to tie a necktie!!!

The Walk-Through:

I never thought of starting a tie backwards.

I never thought of starting a tie backwards.

I can't really tell the different from the front, but the back looks kind of fancy...

Update #3: The Windsor…

Date: 7-3-2014

I now know the Windsor!!!

I learned how to tie this knot while wearing a tee-shirt and couldn't help but think all these knots look the same. It seems like the only reason to know multiple knots is to impress anyone who may happen to see you go through all these complex steps to make something that looks the same as everything else.

Tonight I finally saw the Windsor on a collared shirt and could see the difference and kind of liked it, though I'd still only use this technique if I knew someone was watching.

Update #4: The Conclusion…

Being that I worked a job where I had to wear a necktie when I set this resolution, I was excited to learn multiple techniques to switch things up in an otherwise monotonous job.

Unfortunately, whether I worked the day shift or the night shift, I didn't start getting ready for work until the last possible moment. I often chose speed over technique to rush out the door and went with the knot that I knew.

I'd always threaten to learn different necktie knots on my time off but as soon as I left the store I mentally clocked out as well. I wanted nothing to do with work while at home and that ended up including playing around with my assigned necktie.

I was also disappointed by the fact that the knots (at least the knots taught in the book I bought) all look the same in the end.

I still haven't been all that good at looking forward to check and see which resolutions are due. I don't know what it is but since I've moved home I've lost that preemptive planning that I'm usually pretty good at. I've also never had a project due every day before.

I was going to try to knock the rest of this resolution today but between the fact that:

  1. I'm busy today.

  2. I don't see myself wearing a tie again any time soon.

  3. All the end results from the book look the same.

I decided to give this resolution a fail for now but I do plan to revisit the resolution at some point in the year. I don't think I'm going to continue using the book though. Instead… I plan to use the internet to learn 20 fancy techniques like the one below:
