Resolution #291: Buy And Beat Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks To See My Old Testing Team!!!

Due Date: 10-18-2015

The Resolution: As I've pointed out in other video game resolutions, I’m in no way a gamer of any kind. I gave up on video games after Super Nintendo. The controls just became too complex for my dyslexic head to deal with.

It's bad enough I have to grab at an invisible air pen to tell the difference between right and left let alone figure out A, B, X, Y, R, R1, L, L1, etc. (I just listed eight buttons and that's not even all of them.)

The first job I got after graduating film school was as a video game tester for Midway's new Mortal Kombat game Shaolin Monks. Even though I'm not a real fan of video games, I am a fan of novelty and boy howdy is playing video games for a living as an adult is pretty surreal.

I worked on the game for about six months playing the game from eight to twelve hours a day. One night we even played for twenty-four hours straight. They bought pizza and turned it into a real slumber party type of atmosphere.

By the end of the six months, I could beat the entire game, unlocking every secret blindfolded and drunk.

That was close to ten years ago and I haven't played Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks since

Today I noticed that sell Mortal Kombat toys in my store which led me to wonder if I still have this video game locked down.

Wait did I just say this was close to ten years ago?

Result #291: I Couldn't Afford The Console… Or The Game… So… I Was Unable To Test My Old Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Knowledge…

Update #1: The Conclusion…

Even though I would never consider myself to be a gamer I have to say that testing Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was one of my favorite jobs. Not only was the novelty of the job itself enough to keep me entertained but our team was a ragtag group of goofballs that seemed to be having the most fun of all the testing teams in the building.

Since I am not a gamer I don't have any of the consoles laying around that are compatible to play Shaolin Monks. I recently found an emulator to play this game on my computer but I can't figure out how to configure the player to get the game to work right.

I tried again today but keep running into the same problems. It runs slow and the controllers don't work quite right. It's very close though, I just don't have the time today to figure it out.

Since this resolution experiment is evolving into an ongoing bucket list challenge I will figure it out someday and when I do I will test to see if I still know where everything is and as always I'll let you know when I do.
