I was listening to a podcast about Marilyn Monroe while I was out walking the dog this morning and I was surprised to see just how much I related to her story. Though my road to the mental disorders that we share is a much different route, I see many similarities with her thought processes as gleaned from interviews and the people who knew her.

First off, there is the identity thing. They say that one of the reasons that she changed her name from Norma Jean to Marilyn Monroe was a way of killing off this older, insecure identity to allow her to be an entirely different person. This is pretty much how I evolved from going by my first name for most of my life then switch to my last name when I moved to Seattle and how now I'm pretty much just a ghost known as The Wicker Breaker.

This was a way of killing the past while allowing me to have a fresh start with a much more confident personality. This also leads to how I relate to her in the way that was much smarter than she would show in her persona. They said her plan was to play this dumb character to sneak into a place of power with the end game to have full control over her career. This was always my "dumb" dream to start out writing stupid comedies until I had the power to write what I really wanted.

Unfortunately, neither of us successful accomplished this plan and the process may have driven us both crazy. Of course, she got much further with her strategy which allowed her demons to get much bigger but with the same approach to self-medication. It turns out she was also an insomniac like me and like me she would take a lot of sleeping pills then stay up to trigger a woken dream feeling.

I'm not done with the episode yet, so I'm not sure if this is the end of my findings. I'll be listening to the conclusion of the show during tomorrow's dog walking adventure. If I make any more findings I'll be sure to let you know when I check in with tomorrow's daily installment of my mundane life.

Talk to you then,

The Wicker Breaker
