365 Days Of Marketing And Me: Day Sixty-Five - 3/6/2021

One Creative Introvert’s Effort To Take On The Extroverted Marketing World…

Welcome to day number sixty-five of 365 Days Of Marketing And Me… where yesterday I almost fell out of my seat when I saw how one tweak ended up speeding up this website so much… up until I started using the Lighthouse extension for Chrome… to search for more areas to investigate to make things move even a little faster…

Before running my first Lighthouse analysis… I thought that all of the slowness had to do with my image sizes… because I’ve been known to take a gigantic image straight from my phone and then slap then onto the page where needed… with no editing… no resizing… not providing alt text… because… up until I started to run analytics… I thought that the “no need to know how to code…” site builder that I use was more idiot-proof than it actually is…

I always figured that the fact that when the tool would say “resizing image now” that I was good… but… I was using PNG files that were huge even after compression… so I thought that was why my Lighthouse Performance numbers were always less than 10… and that I would stay that way until I got around to fixing every single image… which is going to be a lot of work… but I can’t wait to start after I finish the queue of free marketing course that I have left to get through…

Since I figured the solution was so far off from me having the time to get to… I decided to ignore Lighthouse for a while… now that it’s getting hard to find easy SEO issues to fix… I thought I would try Lighthouse again… and was excited to see that all of my scores were in the high 80s and above… except for my performance score that was still at a 9…

Having fewer issues to distract me… I decided to really look into what was causing my site’s speed issues… of course… my site-building app’s support was worthless… because they refuse to talk about ANYTHING having to do with a third-party connection… so I decided to try the speed accelerator that’s available through Ezoic… after being told that this app would do something with caching to resolve my first-party app’s forced javascript problems… it’s $19.00 a month… which isn’t bad.. considering the fact that the rest of their service is free…

Let me be clear… they are not sponsors… I just have an affiliate link and like their service… I also don’t fully grasp the technical reasons why this works… but after setting up the accelerator… my Lighthouse Performance score went a 9 to an 84…. which is what almost sent me to the floor after seeing it… thinking at best that I’d just to maybe 25???

I wish I would have thought to take a “Before” screenshot… so… you’ll just have to take my word that there was such a big improvement… either way… as a D+ to C- grade point average student in high school… I’ll take the solid B to B+ average Lighthouse grades… while keeping in mind that I’m still making improvements!!!

And with that… I’m going to wrap up the marketing portion for today in order to move on to share how I handled the task from yesterday…

According to the 365 Days Of Marketing book… yesterday was National GI Day… which may have been the hardest day for me to figure out how to create a task that would properly celebrate the theme…I do have an old post from this site about GI Joe… but I just used that to technically fulfill another task a couple of weeks ago…

Then I started to think about other old content that might have anything to do with GIs… and thought… maybe I could share a link to my reviews of all 100 movies on the AFI Top 100 Movies Of All Time list… to have you then search to find any movies that have to do with war… since I’m not a huge fan of the war genre… so I can’t think of anything off the top of my head…

I finally decided to share a photo of an honorary plaque for my grandfather who fought in WWII… Korea… and Vietnam while going from a Private to a Lieutenant Colonel… he’s the one who inspired me to become a drunken storyteller… and was also the glue to my mom’s side of the family… so it was sad to see him go…

And there you have my tribute/technical fulfillment of yesterday’s task… with that let’s see what the book has in store for today…

The 365 Days Of Marketing book says that today is Employee Appreciation Day… which highlights why I probably should at least open a book before turning it into a long-term challenge… as I’ve pointed out before… I thought the 365 days of marketing tasks would be more like… create business cards… try cold calling techniques… get at least ten leads…

That’s not the case… there are no real assignments at all… just suggested gift bags for customers… and team-building ideas for employees… based on a daily theme… I’m the one who then turns that into an actual task to share… so I’m my only employee… does that mean that I have to appreciate myself… I guess I could appreciate the old mutt… because I often joke that she is my guard dog… I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

And now… to wrap it all up… below are my statistics for the last seven days… now complete with speed stats…
